Sandra Wassilie (Co-Founder, Fmr. Chair & Treasurer)

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 9.58.39 PMSandra Wassilie is a co-founder of Bay Area Generations. During her tenure in building the organization, Sandra served as Secretary, as Treasurer and as Chair of the Board of Directors.

She holds MA and MFA degrees in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University where she enjoyed stints first as managing editor, then as poetry editor on SFSU’s literary journal, Fourteen Hills At SFSU, she was a recipient of the Ann Fields Poetry Prize and also received a Celestine Poetry Award from Holy Names University.. Her poetry appears in Alaska Women Writing, Between the Lines, California Quarterly, Cirque, sPARKLE & bLINK, Transfer,Writing Without Walls, and elsewhere. In Alaska where she lived over 50 years, she taught adult literacy, GED and ESL; started and managed several adult basic education programs; co-founded the Alaska Adult Education Association; and ran her own technical writing company, High Tide Writing, for twelve years. In this capacity, she worked with Yup’ik and Sugpiat people on developing culturally relevant curriculum for K-12 grades, and served as the 2003 Centennial Celebration Coordinator for the City of Seward, revitalizing its historic memory.
